WASHINGTON/MOSCOW, Jun 5 (PRIME) -- A bill on sanctions against the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream-2 has been submitted to the U.S. Senate, Senator John Barrasso, co-author of the bill, said late on Thursday.
He added that the bill was aimed at adjusting and extending the existing sanctions. Five senators from both parties including Texas's Ted Cruz supported the draft law.
The bill offers to sanction insurers of the vessels building the pipeline, including underwriters and reinsurers. It also offers to punish the companies that provide testing, inspection and certification services to the companies building the pipeline.
Spokesman for pipeline operator Nord Stream 2 AG Jens Mueller said that the company was assessing possible consequences of the bill. "We are aware of the new bill submitted for consideration of the U.S. Senate, we are analyzing possible consequences for the project if it enters in force," the official said.
Russian Senator Oleg Morozov admitted that the new sanctions could make completion of Nord Stream-2 more difficult but Russia will find a way to do it.
